Graduated from the G. Verdi Conservatory in Milan under the guidance of Emilio Poggioni he continued his studies with Bruno Giuranna establishing himself as one of the most important violists of his generation. From 1993 to 1999 he was a member of the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala and in 1999 he became Principal Viola of the RAI National Symphony Orchestra collaborating with some of the most prestigious conductors in the world. He has performed as a soloist with the RAI National Symphony Orchestra the Orchestra da Camera di Padova e del Veneto I Pomeriggi Musicali di Milano I Cameristi della Scala the Moscow Soloists the Hessisches Orchestra Wiesbaden the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra the Krasnojarsk Chamber Orchestra the Orchestra Sinfonica Abruzzese I Solisti Aquilani and La Fil-Filarmonica di Milano. In 2009 Claudio Abbado invited him to join the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. His numerous performances of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante include collaborations with soloists such as G. Carmignola A. Milani D. Schwarzberg M. Rizzi C. Parazzoli and P. Berman. With the RAI Orchestra he performed Bartók’s Viola Concerto conducted by G. Phelivanian Hindemith’s Der Schwanendreher under J. Axelrod Berlioz’s Harold en Italie conducted by A. Lazarev and Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with A. Milani under the direction of Christian Arming and Robert Trevino.In 2013 he was invited to Sochi Russia for a concert with Yuri Bashmet and the Moscow Soloists for the presentation of the 2014 Winter Olympics. Recently he returned to Russia to perform Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with violinist Sergei Dogadin winner of the 2019 Tchaikovsky Competition under the direction of Victor Tretyakov. During the 2019-2020 season of the Orchestra Sinfonica Abruzzese he performed Bruch’s Romance for Viola and Orchestra and Bruch’s Double Concerto with violinist Marco Rizzi conducted by Alessio Allegrini a performance later released on CD by AMADEUS magazine. In October 2021 he was invited to the closing concert of the Moravian Festival in Brno performing Tigran Mansurian’s Viola Concerto with the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Eduard Topchjan. His extensive chamber music collaborations include performances with artists such as Y. Bashmet L. Hagen M. Argerich N. Znaider M. Brunello G. Sollima E. Dindo A. Meneses V. Tretiakov M. Rizzi and P. Berman. With Alessandro Milani and Pierpaolo Toso he refounded the Nuovo Trio Italiano d’Archi reviving the name of the historic ensemble of Franco Gulli Bruno Giuranna and Giacinto Caramia. A teacher in various courses in Italy and abroad and a member of numerous competition juries he founded and serves as the artistic director of the Garda Lake Festival. He has recorded for labels such as Amadeus Brilliant Classics Naxos Phoenix and Movimento Classical. For the DYNAMIC label he recorded Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with Alessandro Milani a recording considered by critics to be among the finest available. For many years he has taught the annual advanced viola course in Rome at the Avos Project International School of Music and is a professor of viola at the G. Cantelli Conservatory in Novara. He plays a 2006 Filippo Fasser viola and is a PIRASTRO artist.
