Born in 1980 in Mannheim-Neckarau, Maximilian von Pfeil received his initial cello lessons when seven years old, first from Ulrich Birnbaum, later from Christiana Aydintan, under whose tutelage he remained for 9 years. He was a student of Prof.Wolfgang Boettcher and his assistant Martin Löhr at the Universität der Künste Berlin (University of the Arts Berlin), graduating from this institution in 2004 with a diploma. Having continued his education with
Prof.Boettcher, von Pfeil received a graduate diploma with highest honors (“Konzertexamen mit Auszeichnung”) in 2008.
In masterclasses, Maximilian von Pfeil performed for Artur Noras, Jens-Peter Mainz und Heinrich Schiff.
Prize-winner at several competitions, Maximilian von Pfeil was awarded 1 st prize winner at the “Bundeswettbewerb Jugend-musiziert“, Germany’s highest ranking youth competition in 1998.
He subsequently was invited to a multiple city concert-tour of Italy (recitals were given in Rome, Genoa, Florence and Milan). He was also prize-winner at the international „Pacem in terris“ competition, and was chosen in 2004 to be a recipient of a stipend of the “Deutschen Stiftung Musikleben”. As a soloist, he performed Haydns D-Major Concerto with the Nürnberger Symphoniker in Bayreuth, and in 2004 was invited to play at the festival „Fränkische
Musiktage“ in Alzenau.
Among his recordings for radio station NDR (Hamburg and Hannover) are solo works by Bach, Britten and Cassado.
Active as a chamber musician as well, Maximilian von Pfeil is a member of the „Mondiale“ Piano Quartet, and in 2007 formed a regular duo with pianist Katarzyna
Wiecorek . In 2009 he became member of the “ Max Brod piano Trio with whom he recorded 3 cd for the “Darbinghaus& Grimm label. In 2011 the trio was invited for a tour threw the USA.
For many years, Maximilian von Pfeil was a member of the Lower-Saxony Youth Orchestra, as well as of the European Union Youth Orchestra. Since 2003 he regularly performs as sectional cellist at the Deutsche Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the SWR Radio Orchestra Stuttgart and, since 2006, often works for the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Kammerorchester Basel.
For the seasons 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 he got a time contract in the Gewandhausorchester zu Leipzig.
For the season 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 he won an audtion for being extra player at Orchestra “ Accademia Santa Cecilia” in Rome. In 2014 he got a position as principal cello at the Oviedo Philharmonic Orchestra in Spain. In may 2015 he won as first and only suitable the audition for the position of first cello in the Orquestra Sinfonica del Pricipado de Asturias, in Oviedo, where he started working in January 2016. He is as well collaborating as first cello with the Orchestra Leonore in Pistoia.
During the season 2016/2017 he has been perfoming as soloist Strauss’ “Don Quixote” with the Orquestra sinfonica del Principado de Asturias, collecting several successful press reviews.
